Super Entertaining Concert
|
Last night I saw BB King in concert at the Dodge Theater in Phoenix. That was by far one of the most enjoyable concerts I have ever been to. BB is 81 years old, can’t stand for the concert any longer, but that doesn’t matter. You would think at 81 years of age his voice would have gone, it hasn’t. I couldn’t believe how loud and how strong his voice was. Sounded just like his records.
Then he hit that first note on Lucille. His tone was so pure. He is the master of that guitar. Loud and in your face when he wanted, soft and under spoken when he felt it. Watching him play was like all the clips I had ever seen on TV. Even though he sat during the show you could see how much he wanted to get up and dance. He was moving and dancing in his seat.
I expected great music but what I didn’t expect was the comedy and dialog. In between and during songs BB’s talking to the crowd was so entertaining. His stories and comedy bits made a great evening of music that much more fun. I don’t think I have ever gone to a concert and laughed so hard. In his years of constant touring he has mastered the art of working the crowd and making everybody walk away from his concert with a huge smile on their face. As I walked out of the Dodge Theater everybody was smiling and laughing, sharing their favorite moments of the show with friends.
BB’s band was great. They sounded incredible. BB was sure to mention each band member each time they had a solo in any of the songs. Funny BB’s band included a Tenor Sax, Bari Sax and for one song a Soprano Sax, but no Alto. Not that they needed it, just an oddity. Just a great band.
One of the opening acts was Henry Butler. I personally have never heard of Mr. Butler before but he put on an excellent show. Henry plays piano and while listening to him play the blues I just closed my eyes and could imagine sitting in a small blues bar with a glass of whisky in front me, enjoying the experience. A great talent and ton of fun to listen too.
But back to BB King; this man is a true legend, national treasure if a man can be. For many people he is the blues and one of the last links to the beginning of the blues and with that rock and roll. BB was around before rock, not to many guitarists that can say that. BB is one of that last living people who actually influenced the beginning of rock. The day that BB no longer walks this earth will be a very sad day for the US and the world as a whole. Until then BB said he would continue to tour. Each time he comes to Phoenix I will be there.
