Crohns Disease

So on Sunday I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. I really didn’t know much about it but that “disease” word isn’t a good one. Sounds like we caught mine early and at worst it is manageable. No one knows what causes it and there is no cure. It is a disease of the small intestine. In worst cases it causes the small intestine to stop processing food and can cause it to close not allowing food to pass.
So basically I am on a ton of pills for the next couple of months and a bunch of doctor’s visits.

I wasn’t aware of this until my mother told me, but my cousin died of the disease over 20 years ago. I called her sister to ask about it because that kind of freaked me out a little. I guess when she got it doctors didn’t know much about the disease and she was diagnosed with all kinds of issues until she saw a specialist. But they really didn’t know how to treat it and it may have been too advanced by that time to treat it with anything that they had.

Knowing the pain that I felt with my bought, I can’t imagine the pain she must have felt with the much more advanced form of the disease. I was very young when she was sick and didn’t understand all of this at that time. But I know have a much larger appreciation for what she went through and feel very badly that I wasn’t old enough to know.

I am very thankful that mine has not progressed to that stage and that medicine has progressed to where I can live a normal life with minimal interruption if what my doctor says is true. I am very sad that my cousin didn’t get the same opportunity.
But as it stands now, my disease appears to be contained and with a small lifestyle change will continue to be contained. I feel I owe some of it to my cousin, I am sure that some knowledge came from her ordeal that has or will help to make mine that much easier, I am just sorry that hers came to the end it did.

Worst part for me, no more Coca-Cola for me for the rest of my life and no drinking while I am on these pills. It could have been so much worse.

Super Entertaining Concert

Last night I saw BB King in concert at the Dodge Theater in Phoenix. That was by far one of the most enjoyable concerts I have ever been to. BB is 81 years old, can’t stand for the concert any longer, but that doesn’t matter. You would think at 81 years of age his voice would have gone, it hasn’t. I couldn’t believe how loud and how strong his voice was. Sounded just like his records.

Then he hit that first note on Lucille. His tone was so pure. He is the master of that guitar. Loud and in your face when he wanted, soft and under spoken when he felt it. Watching him play was like all the clips I had ever seen on TV. Even though he sat during the show you could see how much he wanted to get up and dance. He was moving and dancing in his seat.

I expected great music but what I didn’t expect was the comedy and dialog. In between and during songs BB’s talking to the crowd was so entertaining. His stories and comedy bits made a great evening of music that much more fun. I don’t think I have ever gone to a concert and laughed so hard. In his years of constant touring he has mastered the art of working the crowd and making everybody walk away from his concert with a huge smile on their face. As I walked out of the Dodge Theater everybody was smiling and laughing, sharing their favorite moments of the show with friends.

BB’s band was great. They sounded incredible. BB was sure to mention each band member each time they had a solo in any of the songs. Funny BB’s band included a Tenor Sax, Bari Sax and for one song a Soprano Sax, but no Alto. Not that they needed it, just an oddity. Just a great band.

One of the opening acts was Henry Butler. I personally have never heard of Mr. Butler before but he put on an excellent show. Henry plays piano and while listening to him play the blues I just closed my eyes and could imagine sitting in a small blues bar with a glass of whisky in front me, enjoying the experience. A great talent and ton of fun to listen too.

But back to BB King; this man is a true legend, national treasure if a man can be. For many people he is the blues and one of the last links to the beginning of the blues and with that rock and roll. BB was around before rock, not to many guitarists that can say that. BB is one of that last living people who actually influenced the beginning of rock. The day that BB no longer walks this earth will be a very sad day for the US and the world as a whole. Until then BB said he would continue to tour. Each time he comes to Phoenix I will be there. If you have a chance to see him I highly recommend you do.

'07 Sugar Bowl

Nothing I like better than Notre Shame getting worked. Charlie Weis has been touted at the best coach ever. Too bad he can't win a big game. Notre Dame didn't deserve to play in a BCS game. The first half they made a game out of it. The second half LSU decided to end the game and Notre Shame had nothing say about it. It was great.

Surprisingly Howie Long and Terry Bradshaw were pretty entertaining as announcers.

Fox BCS Coverage

Fox's BCS coverage sucks. Their production is terrible. The audio goes in and out. When the band is playing you can barely hear the anouncers. It is terrible. I hate it when they introduce the players and don't show what year they are in school. I always like to know, who to watch for in the draft and who the stud freshman is on the team.

It was really just second rate as far as the production of the games go.

'07 Cotton Bowl

Bill Callahan lost another games based purely on coaching. Calling a fake punt early in the game and turning the ball over inside our 20 to allow an easy touch down. Then in the fourth quarter a terrible 3rd and 11 play then going for it on 4th instead of trying the long field goal to tie the game.

He needs to coach to give the team the best chance to win the game. Today he blew it. The team played great, but 3 coaching calls lost the game. Nebraska virtually owned the first half of the game. The two turn overs let Auburn back in the game. One was an interception off a tipped ball, that happens. The fake punt is inexcusable.

Callahan needs figure out how to coach to win a college football game. Don't try fake punts in the first half unless you are way down and score enough points to put a team out early.
