Florida State Should be Ashamed

The Florida State boosters and administration should be ashamed for the way they treated Bobby Bowden this past season.  The man made FSU football.  If it weren't for him and his staff they would be no better than South Florida is, not National Championships, no Heisman winners.  They would still be trying to become relevant.

To force the guy out like that when all he wanted was one more season is amazing.  I am glad that Bowden said he would not do fund raising for the school.  After they way they treated him and then they ask him to go shake hands and kiss babys to get money from people.

In the end FSU football is probably a thing of the past.  They can't recruit against Florida, Miami is trying to get back and South Florida is on the way up.  That talent that FSU used to get just isn't there for them anymore.

In the end I am not a FSU fan but I do respect Bobby Bowden for what he did there.  They will never have a coach like that again.

Husker's '09, Looking Back

The '09 season wasn't a great season performance wise for the Huskers.  Don't get me wrong it was a lot better than most of the teams we fielded over the decade but it was a building year mainly for the offense.  The offense was pretty bad most of the season, the Iowa State game was a definite low for the O.

The progression of the Blackshirts is what will be remembered from the '09 season. Ndamukong Suh is probably the best defensive tackle to ever play college ball.  The Heisman vote is such crap.  It is supposed to be the best college football player that year.  That is another post however.  To hold OU without an offensive touchdown basically win the Texas game and allow the offense to turn the ball over 8 times in the ISU game and only lose that game by 2 points.  That is one hell of a defense, not to mention what they did to U of A.  33 to 0 was a statement.

But the season was not a loss.  It was actually a great season going forward.  The team seemed to really come together in the bowl, lots of new offense that I hope will continue into next season.  The D lost Suh and a few others but there are a lot of young players that have now been in the system for a year.  The depth that Callahan could never build.  Pelini seems to understand college football and how to build a program.  I personally feel very good about the direction of the program.

If the team can get the offense going next year and the D really is better as Bo and Carl say it will be then the sky is the limit.  We have Texas in Lincoln with a new quarterback and a chip on Bo and Carl's shoulder.  Great way to prove the team is back.

It was a fun team to watch, way to many heart breaking losses but we played with the best that the Big 12 has to offer and a VT team that was very good when we played them and only got better over the season.  It would have been interesting to play them in a bowl and see how that went.  I think it would have been a really good game similar to the early season meeting, hopefully with a different outcome.

Overall I feel that the Huskers are a lot better off than they were a year ago.  I really can't wait for next season.

Chiefs to retire Derrick Thomas's number!

All I really have to say about that as an Elway fan and growing up a Bronco fan.  It is about time!  Can't think of a player that has played for the Chiefs since that was half the player or game changer that guy was.  Nice of the Chiefs to decide to retire his number so long after his death.  The guy was the franchise along with Neil Smith on the defensive side of the ball.

It shouldn't have taken this long really!

Pat Bowlen

I have to say, what is Pat Bowlen doing with the Broncos?  Name one good coach that he has hired, other than Shanahan?  Reeves, Philips this new guy that has pissed the starting QB off?  I really wonder what Pat was doing this whole time?  I am starting to think that Pat just wants to run around as the owner of the Broncos and doesn't really know or care anything about the team other than being the owner and maybe winning now and then.

If Bowlen took a little control his team wouldn't be such a mess.

Broncos and Jay Cutler

This is whole trade thing is stupid and I have to say completely Pat Bowlen's fault.  He needs to get control of his team.  He brought a young coach in that obviously has no experience as a head coach.  He tried to trade the franchise QB, something that is very risky.  If it doesn't work out then guess what, this is what you get.

On Jay's side, he should do what Elway did, wait the coach out.  This new guy is a loser.  Look at how he is doing business.  Bowlen made a bad hire.  The Broncos are looking more and more like the Patriots everyday.  They are going from a classy organization to cheap in one off season.  The Bronco fans won't back a coach like that.  Denver isn't the east coast, they still have midwest values.  Jay should bite his tongue as Elway did and win games despite the coach.

Just my opinion!

College Football Removing the Red Shirt

So Dan Beebe the commisioner of the Big 12 is trying to drum up support to basically remove the red shirt from college football and make it so players have 5 years to play. I think it is a good idea based on the fact that the schedules keep getting longer and the scholarships keep getting fewer. Actually what I would like to see is them go back to the 105 scholarship limit. Then you have 21 scholarships each year over that 5 year span. It would be much better for college football. With the bowl system and all parity like the NFL has just doesn't work.

If you go to playoffs that is a different story and a different blog post.

Return to Husker Football Glory?!?

Tom Osborne will be announced as the interim Athletic Director at the University of Nebraska in a press conference later today. Does this mark a return to glory for the football program? I definitely hope so.

Tom Osborne and Bob Devaney defined what Nebraska Football was and in many people’s minds; what Husker Football should be. Tom was head coach at UNL for 25 years winning 3 national championships in his last four years. Under Tom the football team was always in the hunt but just couldn’t seem to get it done until Tom’s last few years.

Now with Osborne as AD what does that mean for Callahan? I have heard that Tom was not happy with the hiring of Callahan, so now with the Football program in shambles does Tom make a move, I think yes. I believe that Callahan will be forced to make some coaching changes and I have heard that Charlie McBride in among the names for the Defensive Coordinator position for the end of the season and that Callahan will be fired after the Colorado game.

So if Callahan is let go, who will be the next coach at UNL? Turner Gill, Tom Rathman, Monte Kiffin? Not sure but I hope it is someone with a sense of the traditions of Nebraska Football.

Let me know what you think, should Tom stay, if not who do you think would be a good fit? Should Callahan be fired and if so who should replace him?

Time to fire a couch

So Pederson gave Callahan a new contract and then Callahan goes on to have a season that looks a lot like the season before Solich got fired. If Callahan is such a great recruiter why is it that our defense can't stop anyone? Where are all these recruits?

I think it is time for chancellor Perlman to step down, Pederson to be fired along with Callahan. Maybe we can get Solich back, at least he has been on a National Championship coaching staff.

The three men who may have ruined Nebraska Football, Chancellor Harvey Perlman who hired Pederson and let him fire Frank Solich after hiring a whole new coaching staff. Funny, Bo Pelini is couching the hell out of that LSU defense and we can't stop anyone.

Steve Pederson, the AD that came to Nebraska and destroyed 50+ years of tradition. I don't know, 5 National Championships under the old system, but I guess that 5 was to large a number for Steve to count.

Bill Callahan, the man who is such a coaching genius that he got rolled in a Superbowl because he didn't change his play calls. This guy is said to be a great recruiter but all his top recruits end up playing for other colleges. He hasn't won a big game since taking over and has had his 4 years and the team looks worse in some cases than it did under Solich.

I have an idea, lets coach and recruit some defense. All the defensive coachs should be fired ASAP.

NFL Draft -- First Round

Biggest blown pick in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, Ted Ginn Jr picked by Miami.  What were they thinking?  There were better wide outs on the board at that point and they have much bigger needs.  Buess they figure they are a lock for Trent Green.

Think they totally blew that pick.

But then again, they just got huge value in John Beck in the second round.  They may have just totally lucked out.

Jake "the fake" Part 2

So it turns out that Jake can't make quick desicions. He has now changed his mind and decided to play accept the trade to Tampa. Too bad for their fans. If he starts they have a solid chance of being a middle of the pack team for what ever period of time he is there.

If Jake actually studies the defenses and learns to read them then maybe he has a chance to go out with more touchdowns than interceptions for his career.

Hopefully for all the Tampa Bay fans, Jake will change his mind and retire before they have to endure the pain of him leading their team to loss after loss.

Jake "the fake" Plummer

So rather than be traded to a team that he could actually start on and possibly have some success, Jake Plummer is retiring. But what else should we expect from him. Jake has been a cry baby since he became a NFL player. Jake should grow up. If he wants to retire, then do it. My bet is that he will retire and will comeback either right before the season or the following season.

The other issue with Jake is that he not a good quaterback. He has never been a good quaterback. He has had moments of glory, but he makes so many bad desicions. Last season it was reported that the Broncos did so many rollouts with Jake throwing the ball because Jake can't read defenses and when he rolled out it would break the defense down so that Jake could hit a wide reciever. If that is true and I honestly think it is, why has he started so many games? Maybe he has the physical skills and just isn't smart enough to be a quaterback. His own brother said that Jake doesn't want to go to a new team because he doesn't learn a new system.

Really, what ever Jake wants to do he should just do it. Either way I am happy, he is no longer a 200 Lbs weight around the neck of the Broncos.

Jake has been over rated since he came into the league. People compaired him to Montana, Marino and Elway when he came to the Cardinals. He was going to be the next great QB. I guess that is why those people aren't running football teams.

Retire Jake, do football a favor.

'07 Sugar Bowl

Nothing I like better than Notre Shame getting worked. Charlie Weis has been touted at the best coach ever. Too bad he can't win a big game. Notre Dame didn't deserve to play in a BCS game. The first half they made a game out of it. The second half LSU decided to end the game and Notre Shame had nothing say about it. It was great.

Surprisingly Howie Long and Terry Bradshaw were pretty entertaining as announcers.

Fox BCS Coverage

Fox's BCS coverage sucks. Their production is terrible. The audio goes in and out. When the band is playing you can barely hear the anouncers. It is terrible. I hate it when they introduce the players and don't show what year they are in school. I always like to know, who to watch for in the draft and who the stud freshman is on the team.

It was really just second rate as far as the production of the games go.

'07 Cotton Bowl

Bill Callahan lost another games based purely on coaching. Calling a fake punt early in the game and turning the ball over inside our 20 to allow an easy touch down. Then in the fourth quarter a terrible 3rd and 11 play then going for it on 4th instead of trying the long field goal to tie the game.

He needs to coach to give the team the best chance to win the game. Today he blew it. The team played great, but 3 coaching calls lost the game. Nebraska virtually owned the first half of the game. The two turn overs let Auburn back in the game. One was an interception off a tipped ball, that happens. The fake punt is inexcusable.

Callahan needs figure out how to coach to win a college football game. Don't try fake punts in the first half unless you are way down and score enough points to put a team out early.

More Points

Bill Callahan needs to stop being so conservative.  Learn from Frank Solich in his first few seasons.  He would do the same thing, get up 21 points then just run the ball.  In college football you need to get up 35 to 40 points then run the clock.  Against good teams 21 points isn’t enough.  I know he is trying to protect his defense, but you have to let the players play.  The offense can score.  Get more points then run the ball.

Coaching to Win

If Bill Callahan had couched the first half of the Nebraska vs USC game to win the game as opposed to couching it to stay in the game, then the score might have been a lot closer.  Instead Callahan couched not to lose the game in the first 3 quarters leaving his offense little time to come back and make it a game.  In doing so he made it so that the Nebraska offense could make no mistakes if they were to come back and win the game.  I don't know if he gave up on any confidence he may have had in the secondary of Nebraska's defense, or he is just that poor of a coach.  At one point Bob Davey said something about Osbourne and Muskburger said that if Tom were couching there would have been more points on the board for Nebraska.  I have to agree.  Tom and his staff would have found a way to be in the game.  The defensive secondary looked so unprepared for USC.  I put the blame for the 18 point difference squarely on coaching.  The talent level is different between the two schools right now, but so is the level of coaching.  The guy on the field played hard; if the coaches would have just let them play to their potential instead of tying their hands the game would have been much closer.  Tom would have either won that game or lost by 3, not 18; Frank too for that matter.  The coaching was the main difference in this game.

West Coast

Funny, when Callahan opens up the playbook a bit we move down the field and score a touchdown. When we just try and run up the middle we can do very little. This team can play with USC if Callahan would just let them. USC is bitting hard on all the play action, they should just start playing balanced football and see how it goes.

End of the 3rd

Now at the end of the 3rd quarter Callahan decides to play football. Now he is throwing the ball and is using play action. I know you have to setup the play action, but it shoudn't take 3 quarters to do it. Let Zac Taylor run the offense and let the players make plays.

Coaching Nebraska

Who is coaching this team? We have guys catching punts inside the 5 yard line. We are running wide on 3rd and short again a super fast defense? This is the worst coaching I have ever seen. We aren't attacking USC's weaknesses, we are just playing not to get smoked. This is bullshit!!!!

Nebraska vs. USC

I am watching the Nebraska vs. USC game. What the hell it Callahan doing? Nebraska is just running the ball. Looks like Solich the year we went 7 and 7. I thought he was going to run the west coast offense? He is playing not to get blown out. He isn’t playing to win. I don’t understand, if this keeps up this will be a blow out and I and every other Nebraska fan will be asking what do we pay these coaches for?

Harrison Beck

Two practices into Nebraska's spring training Harrison Beck went missing. No one knew where he was until he sent a text message saying he was ok. Not the problem I guess ends up being that Harrison didn't feel he was getting enough snaps in the two practices they had held and his mommy said he was a better QB that Zack Taylor. Well if he was so much better maybe he should have hung around? Two practices and he runs away and his mommy had to go to the press and explain that her son is the best quarterback on the team and should be getting more snaps and be number 1 on the depth chart.

Of course his mom is going to think that. Harrison might want to grow up a bit. Here are my tips for him.

1. GROW UP!!! If you are going to lead a team, don't run away from the first problem you meet.

2. Tell your mom to stay away from the press. I am sure that having your mommy go to the press and say how great you are is great for the atmosphere in the locker room.

3. If you are so good, then prove it. Go to practice and leave it all on the practice field. If you are the best on the field I don't know any coach who is going to have you riding the pine.

So Harrison transfered to South Carolina to coach Spurrier. I hope his mom gets in the middle of that. Nothing like hearing Spurrier start rattling stuff off about this mamma's boy.

Harrison, grow up, this isn't highschool anymore.

Football Rankings

Ok, so this weekend was the first weekend of college football. And the new rankings are out. Notre Dame fell as they should, probably not far enough though. Tennesse jumped big, I think to much to soon. They played like a top ten team, but again a top ten team that looked terrible. So bad I am not sure how Cal is still ranked, at least they are in the 20's. My question is how is ASU ranked? They almost got smoked by NAU. The only reason they won that game was that they had greater depth. ASU will lose a lot of games this year if they play I-A teams the way they played NAU.

I hate to say it, but I think Miami fell to far in the rankings. That was a great game. I am not sure FSU is a ton ten team, nor Miami at this point.

How does Nebraska fall after a win? Tennesee should have jumped them after they run Cal up and down the field, but who else had such a great game that they should have jumped the Huskers?

One final though. How about them Buffalo's? CU is finally back where they belong, getting beat by anybody and everybody. I think Baylor might have some competition for last in the Big 12 this year. To lose to a division II school at home. I don't know how that coach or those players can show their face around campus. I guess that is why CU hadn't played and division two schools before.

Monday Night Football

At first I thought that Disney was trying to test Al Micheals. "Lets see if this co-anchor makes him jump from the press box." I mean Joe Theisman?? That guy is terrible. But then Al is released from his contract so he can go work with Madden, who has his moments. But is much better than Theisman could ever wish to be. Now we get Tirico who is just bareable when he call college football and Kornheiser who is a writer. Why don't they get someone up there who played the game well, not a guy who is famous for his broken leg. The only booth I want to see Theisman in is one he is locked into with LT and not Ladainian Tomlinson.

My selections: Berman, Tom Jackson and Stuart Scott. Or how about Stuart, Tom Jackson and Sterling Sharpe? Personality, knowledge and fun. Hell put Dan Patrick and Keith Oberman up there with a former player. That would be good TV.

I am not really looking forward to MNF next year with these guys calling the game, I don't know about you.
