The '09 season wasn't a great season performance wise for the Huskers. Don't get me wrong it was a lot better than most of the teams we fielded over the decade but it was a building year mainly for the offense. The offense was pretty bad most of the season, the Iowa State game was a definite low for the O. The progression of the Blackshirts is what will be remembered from the '09 season. Ndamukong Suh is probably the best defensive tackle to ever play college ball. The Heisman vote is such crap. It is supposed to be the best college football player that year. That is another post however. To hold OU without an offensive touchdown basically win the Texas game and allow the offense to turn the ball over 8 times in the ISU game and only lose that game by 2 points. That is one hell of a defense, not to mention what they did to U of A. 33 to 0 was a statement. But the season was not a loss. It was actually a great season going forward. The team seemed to really come together in the bowl, lots of new offense that I hope will continue into next season. The D lost Suh and a few others but there are a lot of young players that have now been in the system for a year. The depth that Callahan could never build. Pelini seems to understand college football and how to build a program. I personally feel very good about the direction of the program. If the team can get the offense going next year and the D really is better as Bo and Carl say it will be then the sky is the limit. We have Texas in Lincoln with a new quarterback and a chip on Bo and Carl's shoulder. Great way to prove the team is back. It was a fun team to watch, way to many heart breaking losses but we played with the best that the Big 12 has to offer and a VT team that was very good when we played them and only got better over the season. It would have been interesting to play them in a bowl and see how that went. I think it would have been a really good game similar to the early season meeting, hopefully with a different outcome. Overall I feel that the Huskers are a lot better off than they were a year ago. I really can't wait for next season. Labels: Football, Huskers

Tom Osborne will be announced as the interim Athletic Director at the University of Nebraska in a press conference later today. Does this mark a return to glory for the football program? I definitely hope so.
Tom Osborne and Bob Devaney defined what Nebraska Football was and in many people’s minds; what Husker Football should be. Tom was head coach at UNL for 25 years winning 3 national championships in his last four years. Under Tom the football team was always in the hunt but just couldn’t seem to get it done until Tom’s last few years.
Now with Osborne as AD what does that mean for Callahan? I have heard that Tom was not happy with the hiring of Callahan, so now with the Football program in shambles does Tom make a move, I think yes. I believe that Callahan will be forced to make some coaching changes and I have heard that Charlie McBride in among the names for the Defensive Coordinator position for the end of the season and that Callahan will be fired after the Colorado game.
So if Callahan is let go, who will be the next coach at UNL? Turner Gill, Tom Rathman, Monte Kiffin? Not sure but I hope it is someone with a sense of the traditions of Nebraska Football.
Let me know what you think, should Tom stay, if not who do you think would be a good fit? Should Callahan be fired and if so who should replace him?Labels: Football, Huskers

So Pederson gave Callahan a new contract and then Callahan goes on to have a season that looks a lot like the season before Solich got fired. If Callahan is such a great recruiter why is it that our defense can't stop anyone? Where are all these recruits?
I think it is time for chancellor Perlman to step down, Pederson to be fired along with Callahan. Maybe we can get Solich back, at least he has been on a National Championship coaching staff.
The three men who may have ruined Nebraska Football, Chancellor Harvey Perlman who hired Pederson and let him fire Frank Solich after hiring a whole new coaching staff. Funny, Bo Pelini is couching the hell out of that LSU defense and we can't stop anyone.
Steve Pederson, the AD that came to Nebraska and destroyed 50+ years of tradition. I don't know, 5 National Championships under the old system, but I guess that 5 was to large a number for Steve to count.
Bill Callahan, the man who is such a coaching genius that he got rolled in a Superbowl because he didn't change his play calls. This guy is said to be a great recruiter but all his top recruits end up playing for other colleges. He hasn't won a big game since taking over and has had his 4 years and the team looks worse in some cases than it did under Solich.
I have an idea, lets coach and recruit some defense. All the defensive coachs should be fired ASAP.Labels: Football, Huskers

Bill Callahan lost another games based purely on coaching. Calling a fake punt early in the game and turning the ball over inside our 20 to allow an easy touch down. Then in the fourth quarter a terrible 3rd and 11 play then going for it on 4th instead of trying the long field goal to tie the game.
He needs to coach to give the team the best chance to win the game. Today he blew it. The team played great, but 3 coaching calls lost the game. Nebraska virtually owned the first half of the game. The two turn overs let Auburn back in the game. One was an interception off a tipped ball, that happens. The fake punt is inexcusable.
Callahan needs figure out how to coach to win a college football game. Don't try fake punts in the first half unless you are way down and score enough points to put a team out early.Labels: Football, Huskers

Bill Callahan needs to stop being so conservative. Learn from Frank Solich in his first few seasons. He would do the same thing, get up 21 points then just run the ball. In college football you need to get up 35 to 40 points then run the clock. Against good teams 21 points isn’t enough. I know he is trying to protect his defense, but you have to let the players play. The offense can score. Get more points then run the ball. Labels: Football, Huskers

If Bill Callahan had couched the first half of the Nebraska vs USC game to win the game as opposed to couching it to stay in the game, then the score might have been a lot closer. Instead Callahan couched not to lose the game in the first 3 quarters leaving his offense little time to come back and make it a game. In doing so he made it so that the Nebraska offense could make no mistakes if they were to come back and win the game. I don't know if he gave up on any confidence he may have had in the secondary of Nebraska's defense, or he is just that poor of a coach. At one point Bob Davey said something about Osbourne and Muskburger said that if Tom were couching there would have been more points on the board for Nebraska. I have to agree. Tom and his staff would have found a way to be in the game. The defensive secondary looked so unprepared for USC. I put the blame for the 18 point difference squarely on coaching. The talent level is different between the two schools right now, but so is the level of coaching. The guy on the field played hard; if the coaches would have just let them play to their potential instead of tying their hands the game would have been much closer. Tom would have either won that game or lost by 3, not 18; Frank too for that matter. The coaching was the main difference in this game. Labels: Football, Huskers

Funny, when Callahan opens up the playbook a bit we move down the field and score a touchdown. When we just try and run up the middle we can do very little. This team can play with USC if Callahan would just let them. USC is bitting hard on all the play action, they should just start playing balanced football and see how it goes. Now at the end of the 3rd quarter Callahan decides to play football. Now he is throwing the ball and is using play action. I know you have to setup the play action, but it shoudn't take 3 quarters to do it. Let Zac Taylor run the offense and let the players make plays. Labels: Football, Huskers

Who is coaching this team? We have guys catching punts inside the 5 yard line. We are running wide on 3rd and short again a super fast defense? This is the worst coaching I have ever seen. We aren't attacking USC's weaknesses, we are just playing not to get smoked. This is bullshit!!!! Labels: Football, Huskers

I am watching the Nebraska vs. USC game. What the hell it Callahan doing? Nebraska is just running the ball. Looks like Solich the year we went 7 and 7. I thought he was going to run the west coast offense? He is playing not to get blown out. He isn’t playing to win. I don’t understand, if this keeps up this will be a blow out and I and every other Nebraska fan will be asking what do we pay these coaches for? Labels: Football, Huskers

Two practices into Nebraska's spring training Harrison Beck went missing. No one knew where he was until he sent a text message saying he was ok. Not the problem I guess ends up being that Harrison didn't feel he was getting enough snaps in the two practices they had held and his mommy said he was a better QB that Zack Taylor. Well if he was so much better maybe he should have hung around? Two practices and he runs away and his mommy had to go to the press and explain that her son is the best quarterback on the team and should be getting more snaps and be number 1 on the depth chart.
Of course his mom is going to think that. Harrison might want to grow up a bit. Here are my tips for him.
1. GROW UP!!! If you are going to lead a team, don't run away from the first problem you meet.
2. Tell your mom to stay away from the press. I am sure that having your mommy go to the press and say how great you are is great for the atmosphere in the locker room.
3. If you are so good, then prove it. Go to practice and leave it all on the practice field. If you are the best on the field I don't know any coach who is going to have you riding the pine.
So Harrison transfered to South Carolina to coach Spurrier. I hope his mom gets in the middle of that. Nothing like hearing Spurrier start rattling stuff off about this mamma's boy.
Harrison, grow up, this isn't highschool anymore.Labels: Football, Huskers
